Valutorio vs Apple Notes: Files, links, a real graph (2026)

Apple stores Notes in a SQLite database synced through CloudKit. You can see the notes, search them, and share them, but you cannot point another program at note number 4,312 as a file, because as far as your disk is concerned it is not one. macOS 26 and iOS 26 added Markdown import and export, which is a genuine improvement after years of weak export, and it operates per note. Ten years of notes is ten years of individual exports.

A Valutorio vault is one folder on disk. One note is one markdown file with a name you chose, sitting in Finder next to the others. Spotlight indexes it. ripgrep greps it. Any editor opens it. Valutorio imports nothing and converts nothing when you open that folder, and if you stop using Valutorio tomorrow the folder is unchanged.

Valutorio is built around the link. Type a wikilink and autocomplete answers in under half a millisecond. Backlinks appear with the sentence they came from, resolved in 0.65 microseconds. The force-directed graph filters and redraws from a 10 ms snapshot, tags carry counts, and full-text search finishes in 1.8 to 6.6 ms on a 2,000-file, 55 MB vault. That is a different kind of tool, not a nicer version of the same one.

Apple Notes is on macOS, iOS, iPadOS, visionOS, and iCloud.com, and it is preinstalled and configured before you touch it. Sync across your Apple devices is reliable and free. The web version at iCloud.com is limited and there is no Android app, so it is effectively an Apple-only tool, but inside that world the coverage is complete.

Valutorio needs macOS 14 or later and runs nowhere else. There is no iPhone app and no iPad app. The vault is a plain folder of markdown, so any text editor on any machine can read it and any file-sync tool can carry it, which keeps the notes portable even though the app is not. If you need to write from your phone, take this seriously as a reason to stay put.

iCloud handles Apple Notes with no setup and it works. The trade is that iCloud is the only option, and when two devices edit the same note you get whatever Apple's service decided, with no view of what happened.

Valutorio Sync is an optional subscription. It moves changes between your Macs in the background at 0.56 s a cycle, encrypted in transit and at rest, with nothing to set up. When two Macs have edited the same note, three tiers run in order: three-way merge, then markdown-aware keep-both blocks, then keep-both artifacts. A note never receives a conflict marker, no conflicted-copy file appears beside it, and a sync interrupted halfway repairs itself. Every subscription also includes a personal MCP endpoint, so an assistant like Claude can search and edit the same vault from anywhere.

Apple Notes is a fast native app with handwriting, document scanning, Apple Pencil support, and audio transcription. It is free with your devices, iCloud+ storage starts at $0.99 a month if you need more space, and Apple is not going to disappear.

Valutorio is a text tool. There is no scanner, no ink, no transcription, no plugin ecosystem, no built-in AI chat, and no shared editing. It is also young, with no reviews yet. Plenty of people run both: Apple Notes for capture, a Valutorio vault for the writing that has to last.

Apple Notes costs nothing beyond the Apple devices you already bought, with iCloud+ from $0.99 a month only if your storage fills up. Valutorio is a paid Mac App Store app, and Valutorio Sync is a separate optional subscription if you want two Macs kept in step. So the honest framing is not price against price, because Apple wins on price and will keep winning. It is whether markdown files, backlinks, a graph, and search in single-digit milliseconds are worth paying for, given that the free option is genuinely good at everything except those four things.
